Description

An escape from the normal daily routine, this comfortable/luxurious overland adventure takes you to some of the most exciting & diverse places to visit in Latin America!!!

Chile

Beginning your epic adventure in the Atacama Desert is the perfect introduction to Latin America! You’ll explore this stark landscape of lakes, high plains, and adobe villages by vehicle and by foot. On the final day, you can relax in hot springs and see geysers spurt boiling water skyward. In between, there are opportunities to visit small desert communities, spot wildlife and get to know the hardy people that call this area home.

San Pedro de Atacama, located on an arid plateau, will be your base of operations during this trip. The small town of low-slung buildings is a popular destination for foreign travelers and offers a range of excellent accommodation and restaurant options. The Atacama area is best reached by flight to Calama airport, which is a 1.5-hour drive from San Pedro.

Bolivia

Moving on from San Pedro de Atacama you’ll be transported to the breathtaking Uyuni Salt Flats. You’ll be able to enjoy remote sites like the Tunupa Volcano, Incahuasi Island, and colored lagoons filled with flamingoes before heading back to La Paz to sample more Andean cuisine and stroll through markets filled with art and textiles.

Perú

Starting in Lima, the north of Peru, still undiscovered by mainstream tourism, rewards any traveler who ventures off the beaten path with untouched ruins and vistas. Then down along Peru’s West Coast, past beautiful beaches with year-round surfing, you’ll arrive at the mysterious Nazca lines, immense geoglyphs carved into the desert sand.

Transitioning down to Arequipa you’ll reach Colca Canyon, before boarding the Andean Belmond Explorer for the experience of a lifetime. Your first-class train journey takes you from Arequipa to Laka Titicaca before arriving in Cusco.

You’ll explore Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, the iconic ruins perched high above the Urubamba River. Arriving by first class train cabins you’ll be guided to explore the ruins with an expert guide in the citadel.

Flying out of Cusco, and heading to Iquitos, you’ll also experience the Peruvian Amazon onboard Delfin III, along the border of Brazil, which gives birth to many of the mighty tributaries of the Amazon River, full of wildlife, indigenous cultures, and pristine wilderness.

Ecuador

See contrasting sides of Ecuador, starting in Quito then moving to the Galápagos Islands to explore. Take a week-long cruise to discover the astonishing biodiversity of the Galápagos Islands, where you’ll meet playful sea lions, marine iguanas, and giant tortoises during stays on San Cristóbal and Santa Cruz. The country’s capital, Quito, sandwiches your island time—your springboard to discover Indigenous and colonial culture and the surrounding volcanic Andes.

Argentina/Brasil

City life in Buenos Aires is a constant blur and a must-see for any visitor interested in soaking up the exciting culture of this country. Argentina boasts a host of natural splendors as well, from the Iguazú Falls in the subtropical north to the icy beauty of Perito Moreno Glacier and the Andean salt flats. At this stage of the trip, you’ll agree that there’s nothing like a well-grilled Argentinian steak accompanied by a glass of local red wine!

AM: Yanallpa PM: Dorado River Yanallpa: Here in the Amazon Rainforest, we can have dry mornings with beautiful sunrises. This is all we need to have a successful pre-breakfast exploration of the forest! The early morning hours are the best time of day to watch birds, observe their special displays and listen to their songs. We will jump on the skiffs and head to the shores of the Ucayali River. This area is green with large trees and old palm trees as well, and these components favor the presence of several parrot species. This particular spot also has a great number of other birds of different species. Perhaps spot a large flock of red-bellied macaws, as well as different types of raptors, woodpeckers, and swallows. If you are very lucky you will hear loud and distinctive sounds of blue and yellow macaws! Dorado River: We will look for the famous hoatzins nesting a few feet above the water, and perhaps a sloth or two of the three-toed kind. The Dorado River can also be home to troops of brown capuchin monkeys mixed up with squirrel monkeys. As the sun sets our aim will be looking for black and white caiman, fishing bats, and Noisy Nights Monkeys where you will encounter a whole new world of adventure.

AM: Pacaya River PM: Magdalena Pacaya River: The Pacaya River is at the very heart of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, Peru’s largest protected area with a mean annual rainfall of nearly 3,000 millimeters, by far the largest protected wetland reserve in the world. Filled with lakes, palm swamps, and streams, the reserve becomes a flooded forest in the rainy season and is sure to be one of the most beautiful places you’ll ever visit. You will also have the chance to explore one of the pristine Amazon lagoons in this wonderful region! On board our skiffs, you will visit a community to meet local villagers who have called Amazonia their home for generations. You may step into a typical schoolhouse where the children will be very happy to have visitors, and then stop by an area to see the women of this community who have a most amazing arts & crafts market. Magdalena: Our skiff will speed along the main river to reach the narrower channels where we will explore the thick rainforest adjacent to the water. During our explorations, we will look for some of the more typical and iconic birds of the New World tropics, such as the lettered aracari toucan, the straight-billed woodcreeper, and the white-eared jacamar. Later on, travel near Flor de Castaña, for an opportunity to swim among pink dolphins. If you are thinking Piranhas, as many people have in their minds when they think about the Amazon River! But don’t worry; the aggressiveness of this characteristic fish of the Amazon is really extremely overrated. After dinner, join us on a movie night to watch “Fitzcarraldo” at the indoor lounge.

AM: Yarapa River PM: Fundo Casual Yarapa River: Along the Yarapa River, you will get to explore this tributary intimately. Listen closely to the sounds from within the mysterious jungle. We travel downriver to this wide creek that leads to an attractive hidden lagoon. As we absorb the beauty of the landscape, we will have the chance to reflect on the wildlife. Hawks, terns, herons, and monkeys which are part of our everyday excursions are readily close by; in this area, we will notice many more inhabitants of the Amazon, the rivereños. People being an important part of this complex bio network only reinforce the fact that we are part of their lives and how our presence here and now could make a difference to the future of this magical land of the Incas. Look out for specific types of Monkeys like the pygmy marmoset, squirrel monkey, and our first Monk Saki. This medium-sized monkey with thick fur and a bushy tail looks more like he is dressed for the Arctic than the Amazon. Fundo Casual: The walk at Fundo Casual jungle trail will take you deep into the rainforest on terra firm (non-flooded forest) where your guide will point out the dynamic creatures and vegetation of the Amazon. Be sure to keep an attentive eye open for spotting surprises! It's almost unbelievable how with every step you find something along the way. Almost definitely Anaconda, Rainbow Boas, Tarantulas, Poison Frogs, and most recently porcupines have been spotted. This is one of the very few places in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve Amazon Rainforest where you will spot the ever so elusive 2-toed sloth. Confluence / Pihuichal: As your naturalist guide spots various creatures for you, the landscape adorned by the usual colors of the sun’s reflections is a great photo opportunity as you witness your last Amazon Rainforest Sunset.

AM: Disembarkation Amazon Forever & Airport departure. Disembarkation: With heavy hearts, the staff will wish you farewell as you begin your departure. At the port of Nauta, our ground crew will be waiting to take you by our private vehicle back to the city of Iquitos, about 95 kilometers journey by paved road. Amazon Forever: On our way from Nauta back to Iquitos airport, you will visit the Rescue & Rehabilitation Center of River Mammals (Amazon Forever) where you will have the chance to meet baby manatees and learn about these wonderful and docile creatures and why they are on the endangered species list. As well, there are also some other animals cared for by the center that have been rescued from capture with the intention of being turned into pets and under other threatening conditions. We welcome you to donate to this ambitious organization and education center as you wish. Our land personnel will wait for you at the airport and give you your boarding passes and help you check-in. Airport departure: Our staff will be on hand to help you with your luggage and check in at Cornel. FAP Francisco Secada Vignetta International Airport in Iquitos. The return flight will take you directly to the city of Lima, the capital of Peru. At the security gate, your guide and Delfin crew will say goodbye. We truly hope that you enjoyed your stay and Amazon travel experience with us!

Today is a free day in Lima for you to relax and explore.

After this short ride, you'll walk along a path towards the waterfall. Enjoy the walk surrounded by a dense forest.

Today you'll have a City Tour of Quito.

Baltra Island - Santa Cruz Island: Bachas Beach Arrive at Baltra airport. Reception at the airport. Transfer IN. Bachas Beach: This beautiful beach is located in the north of Santa Cruz Island; the beach is one km long. The site was named during WWII (World War II) when the American army left two barges on the beach. The early colonists couldn’t pronounce barges correctly, so they called the area “Bachas”.

Santiago Island & Bartolome Islands Sullivan Bay: wet landing and hiking. Description of the place: all the roads and the island are composed of lava flows that have not eroded and cover an extensive area, lava pahoehoe or of cords, hornitos, Mollugo, this plant grows in the lava. Lava Colonizers. Snacks and refreshing beverages expect for you. Lunch Bartolome Island: Dry landing, wet landing for the beach. Activities on this island include walking, swimming, snorkeling, and photography. We will follow a path to the top (114m) where we can see pioneering plants such as tiquilia, chamaesyce, and scalesia. The island has been formed by cones, lava pipes where lava once flowed. Following the wet landing at the beach, we will follow a path through mangrove swamps and sand dune vegetation, to the south beach. At the north beach, guests can enjoy swimming and snorkeling. From the top of Bartolome, we will be able to see the islands of Santiago, Rabida, and Isabela. We will see penguins in the Rock Pinnacle. Dinner

Santa Cruz Island: Highlands & Charles Darwin Station Highlands of Santa Cruz: Our first visit was to the Highlands of Santa Cruz, where you'll go trekking in search of the giant tortoises in their natural habitat, this is a natural spectacular. For this visit, we recommend wearing sports shoes, long pants, raincoats, a hat, and sunblock. Lunch. Charles Darwin Station: is located in the main port on Santa Cruz Island; we will take a private bus to the entrance of the breeding center where we will see tortoises and land iguanas in captivity. This center is the main breeding site on the islands. Animals that were in danger of extinction on the various islands are maintained in captivity. Thanks to the dedicated work of several institutions, some species are being saved. Here lived Lonesome George, the famous last survivor of the giant tortoise species found on Pinta Island. Dinner.

Floreana Island Punta Cormorant: wet landing, snorkeling, and short trekking. This point is located west of Floreana Island and it is famous for its dark green beach (due to the great number of olivine crystals). You can see many marine invertebrates, as well as sea lions, sea iguanas, frigates, and pelicans. Second visit: Devil's Crown: Activities in this place: panga ride and optional swimming. Enjoy a panga ride around a small island, a satellite islet of Floreana Island. Here, we will find a group of rocks that resemble a Crown due to the constant erosion caused by the sea. It is one of the better places to snorkel (shallow diving) in the interior and around the crown. Excellent visibility allows guests to admire a great variety of fish and sea animals. Lunch. Post Office (Mail Bay): Wet landing. Activities: short walk, swimming, snorkeling, explanation of the mail system. Description: Mail Bay is located on the north side of Floreana Island. Captain James Colnett installed an empty barrel to be used as a post office for the whaling fleets that stopped at the Galapagos Islands. You can leave postcards with your friends and relatives here and/or pick up mail to deliver. Back at the ship, delicious snacks and beverages are waiting for you.

Española Island Suarez Point: Dry landing. Activities: Walking, sight-seeing. We recommend sports shoes, a hat or cap, and sunscreen. There is no color more amazing and outstanding in this tropical desert island than that of the blue-foot boobies. These birds have an impressive form of “greeting” and it is a real thrill to see their mating dance. The blue-footed booby can be seen on several of the islands as nesting grounds and feed is located in several coastal locations. The albatross, an aristocratic bird weighing up to four kilograms, can be observed here. One of the largest birds of the islands, approximately 12,000 couples' nest on Espanola Island, and a smaller number nest on Silver Island, near mainland Ecuador. This species is considered endemic to this island; during our walk, we will observe these fantastic birds while taking in the beautiful landscapes offered by this island. It is important to note that albatrosses will not be seen between January and March (non-breeding) season. We will also see colonies of marine iguanas, zayapas, masked boobies, finches, Espanola cucuves, and seagulls unique to the islands. Our walk will be on lava rock where we will be able to see lava tubes. Red mangroves are found here. Delicious snacks and fresh beverages are waiting for you on the ship. Lunch. Gardner Bay: wet landing, activities for this visit: short walk, swimming, snorkeling, and observation of seal colony. The sea lion is one of the animals in Galapagos which gets the total attention of the visitors in the Galapagos: they are curious and playful, but at times aggressive; they are nice and loving, but also lazy. In Gardner Bay, we are going to find many of them relaxing on the beach enjoying the sun. In addition to observing these fascinating animals, while snorkeling, we will be able to swim with sea lions, sea turtles, a diversity of tropical fish, marine iguanas, etc. We will return to the ship and sail to Gardner and Osborn Islets. Dinner.

San Cristobal Island: Interpretation Center - Transfer out Interpretation Center: Dry landing. This center is located in the main port. After breakfast, our first visit is to the Interpretation Center of San Cristobal. This modern and sophisticated architectural space was designed for the natural interpretation of the Galapagos. You will learn about the volcanic formation of the islands, the evolution of the species, the history of human settlement, and complex systems and management models. Transfer out. * This itinerary is subject to change without notice; due to seasonal changes, weather conditions or Galapagos National Park regulations. **

  1. Simon & Mimi Willis
Simon & Mimi's review for Overland Latin America

Mimi and I have just completed a one-month trip of a lifetime with Unu Raymi Expeditions. We are experienced independent travelers who, as active retirees, enjoy private, escorted touring that is customized to our interests and abilities. Originally planned for early 2020, the trip was severely disrupted and reorganized many times due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Potentially, these changes could have spelled the end of our wish to visit Peru and all that went with it. However, James and his team worked overtime to maintain and amend our plans and ensure the trip went ahead when clear to do so. The result was well worth the wait. At every turn, James and his team planned, booked, confirmed, and followed up on all details resulting in a stress-free visit which we cannot fault. The quality of accommodation, guides, transport, drivers, and advice was just as we anticipated and such a result does not occur without professional input. Mimi and I would highly recommend Unu Raymi Expeditions and James and his team without reservation. If we return to South America on another visit, James will be the first person we call.

Accommodation. Great. -The staff at all locations were engaged and reacted rapidly to any concern. We appreciated and enjoyed each hotel’s facilities, food and locations/access to local sights and amenities (food, shopping, walking areas). -Although the accommodations in the Iquitos Doubletree were very nice, we must comment on the internal noise impacting guest rooms/suites overlooking the pool. We would strongly recommend a plaza-side room in preference to a pool-side room. The noise (loud disco/club music) on the poolside was unremitting from morning through evening and far greater than the traffic on the plaza side. Additionally, this hotel was the only one of our accommodations that did not provide daily drinking water. Our personal complaints initially made to staff were subsequently reinforced to management by James. These complaints were heard and we were satisfied with the resolution. Our concerns are the loud music and lack of water represent the hotel management’s standard operating procedure, and this practice will remain. We would have preferred a bottle of drinking water each instead of a cookie! The Lima Hilton hotel staff, particularly at the front desk, dining room and executive lounge, deserve special commendation for exemplary customer service and friendliness. We greatly appreciated this. Of the hotels, El Albergue in Ollantaytambo was the stand-out. We loved the setting, the spacious room, the friendly staff and truly enjoyed being on the train platform. The restaurant staff was very accommodating with our requests for ‘light’ dinners and the staff stayed late as we chatted with fellow travelers after dinner over another (!) bottle of wine. Memorable. The Amazon cruise with Delfin 1 was off the scale. We were accommodated, educated, fed, watered, and pampered beyond belief; strongly recommended. We were also very pleased we booked on the smallest of Delphin’s ships. This made the onboard and outstanding expedition experiences personal and so enjoyable. Delphin’s staff are exceptional.

Transport. Excellent. The standard of the vehicle was most suitable and the drivers were very professional and safe. Jesus was particularly good. As an aside I would recommend the Hiram Bingham train in preference to the Belmond Andean Explorer. This is due to sleep being extremely difficult on the Andean Explorer on night one due to sub-standard trackwork and altitude on night two. The train, food, staff and accommodation were magnificent but if you cannot get a good night’s sleep it makes for a less than wonderful activity. Again, the Belmond staff were exceptional.

Food. Excellent. We loved being introduced to the local fare, although we are not accustomed to big meals at lunchtime! All the restaurants were wonderful; we especially enjoyed the cooking lesson at the restaurant in Lima and the picnic at Ollantaytambo.

Locations. Excellent. In our early planning process, we only personally chose Machu Picchu, Lake Titikaka and the Amazon. They were magnificent as expected, as were all the other sites recommended by Unu Raymi, especially in the Sacred Valley. All sites and experiences exceeded our expectations. We learned so much and since our return to Australia, we have referred to our books on Peru to review and seek additional information on our experiences. We recommend visiting Colca Canyon as a 2-day trip. For us, it was too long a round-trip drive for a one-day experience (especially allowing for the altitude). But we loved seeing the condors soaring, and we would have not wanted to miss that.

Professionalism. Excellent. Nothing needs to be added. We greatly appreciated James’ and Martha’s concern and willingness to help us retrieve a lost phone. Truly above and beyond the call of duty. Communication. Excellent. Before, during and after the trip communication was outstanding. During the trip James contacted us every day to confirm details and address any issues. We could not have asked for more.

Safety. Excellent. Especially when it came to road transport. The drivers demonstrated the patience of Job, and they all kindly and consistently made our comfort, health and safety issues, especially in relation food and water, a priority. Our safety was clearly a concern of the guides during all of our activities.

Guides. Excellent. All guides were well-chosen to manage visitors of our age. At no time did they attempt any activity before first confirming we were OK with the prospect. Additionally, at altitude and when climbing steps, the guides checked regularly on our comfort level. Their individual knowledge was wide-ranging, and we learnt so much more than anticipated due to the guides’ education and backgrounds and ability to put tours into a much-larger cultural and historic context. Martha, Herbert and Freddie were standouts. We commend Martha’s willingness to amend the itinerary on our final day. She and the driver literally made a u-turn and gave us a very special final experience at Pachacamac.

Finally, in addition to the history, culture and amazing sites, landscape, nature we experienced with the guides and drivers, we will long treasure the daily informal interactions we shared with the guides and drivers: Lots of laughter, family stories, and commonalities despite our supposed differences. We also greatly appreciated the ‘downtime’ built into the itinerary, especially around travel days.

Payment Process. Needs Improvement. The problem may have been due to international rules and COVID-19 delays, but the payment process requires addressing. In these days of global credit, it should not be difficult to pay/transfer funds.
