Laguna Humantay (Salkantay Trek)

Get a taste for Peru’s high-alpine scenery and ancient Inca customs during this full-day hike to Laguna Humantay from Cusco; a section of the Salkantay Trek. Ascend to this glacial lake of water located at 13,779 feet (4,200 meters).

See one of the most spectacular sites in the Salkantay region of the Peruvian Andes, on this day trip to Lake Humantay. After a breakfast snack, hit the trail for approximately a 1.5-hr hike to Lake Humantay; gaining approximately 1,300 feet on the way.

You’ll encounter many mules, arrieros (horsemen or muleteers) and their farmsteads of the Region all the way on the trail. Above all, along with experiencing local wildlife it’s a great natural environment for a day trek.

Ample free time at the lake allows you to relax; with many photo opportunities. You’ll enjoy the mountain views of this impressive glacial lake; including the Salkantay Nevada. Afterwards returning down the same trail for lunch al fresco, a delicious locally made and traditional Peruvian recipe which is good for restoring energy.

After; following lunch we head back to Cusco in our transportation. Delivering you back to your hotel or hostel in the centre; where you can head out in the evening for more entertainment.

Itinerary

Get an early start to your morning with a 5:30 AM pickup from your hotel in Cusco. Leave the city behind as your head towards the small town of Mollepata, located in the lush valley of the Apurimac River. Enjoy breakfast in a local cafe before continuing for 1 hour to the small town Soraypampa, where you will start your hike to Humantay lake.

The trail is steep but gorgeous, with views of snow-capped mountains and deep glacial lakes along the way. The hike is shadowed by Salkantay Peak, one of Peru’s most sacred mountains, towering at 20,600 ft (6,280 m), with a spectacular sheer and snowy face. It is matched by the equally impressive Humantay Peak, rising 19,412 ft, (5,916) m. Shamans will often give a blessing when safely reaching the crystal-clear waters of Humantay Lake, located at 14,100 ft (4,300 m).

Once you reach the lakeshore, relax, enjoy a snack, go for a swim (if you are brave!) or give thanks to Pachamama (Mother Earth). When you are ready to hike back down, descend to Soraypampa and have lunch while enjoying the breathtaking panoramic views of the snowy peaks. Drive back to Cusco and spend the evening relaxing in the hotel.
