Overland Latin America

An escape from the normal daily routine, this comfortable/luxurious overland adventure takes you to some of the most exciting & diverse places to visit in Latin America!!!

Chile

Beginning your epic adventure in the Atacama Desert is the perfect introduction to Latin America! You’ll explore this stark landscape of lakes, high plains, and adobe villages by vehicle and by foot. On the final day, you can relax in hot springs and see geysers spurt boiling water skyward. In between, there are opportunities to visit small desert communities, spot wildlife and get to know the hardy people that call this area home.

San Pedro de Atacama, located on an arid plateau, will be your base of operations during this trip. The small town of low-slung buildings is a popular destination for foreign travelers and offers a range of excellent accommodation and restaurant options. The Atacama area is best reached by flight to Calama airport, which is a 1.5-hour drive from San Pedro.

Bolivia

Moving on from San Pedro de Atacama you’ll be transported to the breathtaking Uyuni Salt Flats. You’ll be able to enjoy remote sites like the Tunupa Volcano, Incahuasi Island, and colored lagoons filled with flamingoes before heading back to La Paz to sample more Andean cuisine and stroll through markets filled with art and textiles.

Perú

Starting in Lima, the north of Peru, still undiscovered by mainstream tourism, rewards any traveler who ventures off the beaten path with untouched ruins and vistas. Then down along Peru’s West Coast, past beautiful beaches with year-round surfing, you’ll arrive at the mysterious Nazca lines, immense geoglyphs carved into the desert sand.

Transitioning down to Arequipa you’ll reach Colca Canyon, before boarding the Andean Belmond Explorer for the experience of a lifetime. Your first-class train journey takes you from Arequipa to Laka Titicaca before arriving in Cusco.

You’ll explore Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, the iconic ruins perched high above the Urubamba River. Arriving by first class train cabins you’ll be guided to explore the ruins with an expert guide in the citadel.

Flying out of Cusco, and heading to Iquitos, you’ll also experience the Peruvian Amazon onboard Delfin III, along the border of Brazil, which gives birth to many of the mighty tributaries of the Amazon River, full of wildlife, indigenous cultures, and pristine wilderness.

Ecuador

See contrasting sides of Ecuador, starting in Quito then moving to the Galápagos Islands to explore. Take a week-long cruise to discover the astonishing biodiversity of the Galápagos Islands, where you’ll meet playful sea lions, marine iguanas, and giant tortoises during stays on San Cristóbal and Santa Cruz. The country’s capital, Quito, sandwiches your island time—your springboard to discover Indigenous and colonial culture and the surrounding volcanic Andes.

Argentina/Brasil

City life in Buenos Aires is a constant blur and a must-see for any visitor interested in soaking up the exciting culture of this country. Argentina boasts a host of natural splendors as well, from the Iguazú Falls in the subtropical north to the icy beauty of Perito Moreno Glacier and the Andean salt flats. At this stage of the trip, you’ll agree that there’s nothing like a well-grilled Argentinian steak accompanied by a glass of local red wine!

Jungle Cruise AM: Yanallpa PM: Dorado River Yanallpa: Here in the Amazon Rainforest, we can have dry mornings with beautiful sunrises. This is all we need to have a successful pre-breakfast exploration of the forest! The early morning hours are the best time of day to watch birds, observe their special displays and listen to their songs. We will jump on the skiffs and head to the shores of the Ucayali River. This area is green with large trees and old palm trees as well, and these components favor the presence of several parrot species. This particular spot also has a great number of other birds of different species. Perhaps spot a large flock of red-bellied macaws, as well as different types of raptors, woodpeckers, and swallows. If you are very lucky you will hear loud and distinctive sounds of blue and yellow macaws! Dorado River: We will look for the famous hoatzins nesting a few feet above the water, and perhaps a sloth or two of the three-toed kind. The Dorado River can also be home to troops of brown capuchin monkeys mixed up with squirrel monkeys. As the sun sets our aim will be looking for black and white caiman, fishing bats, and Noisy Nights Monkeys where you will encounter a whole new world of adventure.
    • Delfin III
Jungle Cruise AM: Pacaya River PM: Magdalena Pacaya River: The Pacaya River is at the very heart of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, Peru’s largest protected area with a mean annual rainfall of nearly 3,000 millimeters, by far the largest protected wetland reserve in the world. Filled with lakes, palm swamps, and streams, the reserve becomes a flooded forest in the rainy season and is sure to be one of the most beautiful places you’ll ever visit. You will also have the chance to explore one of the pristine Amazon lagoons in this wonderful region! On board our skiffs, you will visit a community to meet local villagers who have called Amazonia their home for generations. You may step into a typical schoolhouse where the children will be very happy to have visitors, and then stop by an area to see the women of this community who have a most amazing arts & crafts market. Magdalena: Our skiff will speed along the main river to reach the narrower channels where we will explore the thick rainforest adjacent to the water. During our explorations, we will look for some of the more typical and iconic birds of the New World tropics, such as the lettered aracari toucan, the straight-billed woodcreeper, and the white-eared jacamar. Later on, travel near Flor de Castaña, for an opportunity to swim among pink dolphins. If you are thinking Piranhas, as many people have in their minds when they think about the Amazon River! But don’t worry; the aggressiveness of this characteristic fish of the Amazon is really extremely overrated. After dinner, join us on a movie night to watch “Fitzcarraldo” at the indoor lounge.
    • Delfin III
Jungle Cruise AM: Yarapa River PM: Fundo Casual Yarapa River: Along the Yarapa River, you will get to explore this tributary intimately. Listen closely to the sounds from within the mysterious jungle. We travel downriver to this wide creek that leads to an attractive hidden lagoon. As we absorb the beauty of the landscape, we will have the chance to reflect on the wildlife. Hawks, terns, herons, and monkeys which are part of our everyday excursions are readily close by; in this area, we will notice many more inhabitants of the Amazon, the rivereños. People being an important part of this complex bio network only reinforce the fact that we are part of their lives and how our presence here and now could make a difference to the future of this magical land of the Incas. Look out for specific types of Monkeys like the pygmy marmoset, squirrel monkey, and our first Monk Saki. This medium-sized monkey with thick fur and a bushy tail looks more like he is dressed for the Arctic than the Amazon. Fundo Casual: The walk at Fundo Casual jungle trail will take you deep into the rainforest on terra firm (non-flooded forest) where your guide will point out the dynamic creatures and vegetation of the Amazon. Be sure to keep an attentive eye open for spotting surprises! It's almost unbelievable how with every step you find something along the way. Almost definitely Anaconda, Rainbow Boas, Tarantulas, Poison Frogs, and most recently porcupines have been spotted. This is one of the very few places in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve Amazon Rainforest where you will spot the ever so elusive 2-toed sloth. Confluence / Pihuichal: As your naturalist guide spots various creatures for you, the landscape adorned by the usual colors of the sun’s reflections is a great photo opportunity as you witness your last Amazon Rainforest Sunset.

a group of birds sitting on top of rocks near the oceanEspañola Island Suarez Point: Dry landing.  Activities: Walking, sight-seeing. We recommend sports shoes, a hat or cap, and sunscreen. There is no color more amazing and outstanding in this tropical desert island than that of the blue-foot boobies. These birds have an impressive form of “greeting” and it is a real thrill to see their mating dance. The blue-footed booby can be seen on several of the islands as nesting grounds and feed is located in several coastal locations. The albatross, an aristocratic bird weighing up to four kilograms, can be observed here. One of the largest birds of the islands, approximately 12,000 couples' nest on Espanola Island, and a smaller number nest on Silver Island, near mainland Ecuador. This species is considered endemic to this island; during our walk, we will observe these fantastic birds while taking in the beautiful landscapes offered by this island.  It is important to note that albatrosses will not be seen between January and March (non-breeding) season. We will also see colonies of marine iguanas, zayapas, masked boobies, finches, Espanola cucuves, and seagulls unique to the islands. Our walk will be on lava rock where we will be able to see lava tubes. Red mangroves are found here. Delicious snacks and fresh beverages are waiting for you on the ship. Lunch. Gardner Bay: wet landing, activities for this visit: short walk, swimming, snorkeling, and observation of seal colony. The sea lion is one of the animals in Galapagos which gets the total attention of the visitors in the Galapagos: they are curious and playful, but at times aggressive; they are nice and loving, but also lazy. In Gardner Bay, we are going to find many of them relaxing on the beach enjoying the sun. In addition to observing these fascinating animals, while snorkeling, we will be able to swim with sea lions, sea turtles, a diversity of tropical fish, marine iguanas, etc. We will return to the ship and sail to Gardner and Osborn Islets. Dinner.
