Overview
Rainbow Mountain – Mount Vinicunca. Trek one of the most intriguing and colourful mountain ranges in Peru.
Located in the Peruvian Andes in Cusco; just 3 hours away from the historical center. Rainbow Mountain is becoming one of the main attractions to see after or before Machu Picchu. After all; the mountain is famed for its natural; multi-colored beauty at a staggering 5,200m above sea level. This rainbow-like appearance is created by the sediment of minerals throughout the area. This gives the mountain its rainbow of colours such as turquoise, lavendar, gold and others.
However; it was only recently discovered due to the snow melting revealing this hidden gem; that’s still considered holy by many until this day. Since its discovery; Rainbow Mountain has slowly started gaining popularity. It has even been listed in National Geographic’s “Top 100 Places To Visit Before You Die”.
Thus; the first step in any hike is always to prepare for any issues you expect to encounter; and hiking Rainbow Mountain is no different.
Mt. Vinicunca (Rainbow Mountain) standing a little over 17,000ft; (altitude sickness can kick in anywhere over 8,000ft); a 3–4 hour trek on this route can have even the fittest trekkers breathing hard.
We always recommend to spend at least 2 or 3 days in Cusco beforehand acclimating yourself to the area’s elevation.
