Trek & Climb: Ojos del Salado

Adventure to the highest altitude active volcano (Ojos del Salado) in the world & the second highest peak in the Andes!

This is a great introduction to serious trekking and climbing for beginners & intermediates to the discipline of mountain climbing & trekking.

Sited on the Argentinian & Chilean border: Nevado Ojos del Salado stands at a proud 6,893m altitude; the trekking and altitude provide the real challenge on this expedition with a small section of rock climbing at the summit of the route.

Although Ojos del Salado presides on the edges of the Atacama Desert; a very dry region; it is still famed for having the world’s highest crater lake on the eastern side of the volcano, situated at 6,390m.

Following a program of acclimatisation, you’ll set out to make the summit of Ojos del Salado in good timing but always with respect to the altitude.

Itinerary

You'll be collected from Aeropuerto Desierto de Atacama (CPO) and transferred to Bahia Inglesa or Caldera, with time to discover and explore. Reunion with your guide for a briefing and personal equipment check. Overnight: Hotel.
The next day you’ll be transported across the altiplano towards Ojos del Salado. During each day you’ll trek for a few hours at ever increasing altitudes to aid your acclimatisation, before setting up camp for the nights. Highlights include Laguna Santa Rosa, where you’ll observe Andean Flamingos which nest around the laguna year round, and the turquoise waters of Laguna Verde with its hot springs which ease tired bodies during the time you will have here. Treks Valle Chico trekking to Laguna Santa Rosa (3,760m) – Laguna Santa Rosa Camp Transition from Laguna Santa Rosa to Laguna Verde (4,340m) – Laguna Verde Camp Trek to Cerro Mulas Muertas (5,400m) – Laguna Verde Camp Trek climb of San Francisco volcano (6,080m) – Laguna Verde Camp From Laguna Verde drive to Atacama Refuge (5,300m) – Atacama Refuge Rest & Recuperation Day
You'll take a day hiking up to the next stage camp at Tejos Refuge; this helps you further with your acclimatisation period. It may be necessary to help bring summit equipment here. This also helps reduce the cargo for the following day, when you'll move towards the high camp at 5,825m, giving us plenty of time for rest and acclimatisation before the eventual summit day. Overnight: Tejos Refuge
Summit day begins with an early start. The route starts out as a gradual climb before rising on the western ridge up to the volcanic crater. From this point the final challenge is a rock climb of around 20m; here you'll use fixed ropes to secure the ascent to summit. Once commanding this section; the summit of this immense volcano has arrived! Taking time to soak in the views and after taking numerous photos & videos, you'll begin the descent to camp. Usually the summit day takes around 13hrs to complete (ascent & descent). Overnight: Tejos Refuge
Following the expedition, it's time to pack up camp and head back to the Atacama Refuge. Then onto Bahía Inglesa or Caldera to stop over for the night, refresh and enjoy some good food together! Overnight: Hotel
From Bahia Inglesa we'll transfer you to Copiapó Airport for your onward connecting flights home. Until the next time!!
