Ausangate Circuit Trek

If you’re looking for a beautiful and more remote trek for your Peru Adventure; then the Ausangate Circuit Trek is a perfect fit.

The Ausangate Region is a special place; it’s far enough outside of Cusco to be considered remote but it’s also near enough to be accessible for a wonderful adventure. Often you will encounter small poblados (small local communities); with many farming llamas for their way of life. Many children will greet you, often after ‘dulces’ (sweets) to savor. Also, a lot of the houses & shelters in the area don’t have basic utilities such as electricity, gas, tap water; things we take for granted in more developed countries.

This is a remote region to trek in, but close enough to Cusco to be accessible. You’ll trek close to the Ausangate Nevada along with taking in Rainbow Mountain (Mt. Vinicunca) and Red Valley. Whilst circumnavigating the Ausangate nevada you’ll hit many high mountain passes, getting up to around 5,200m.

For more information about the Ausangate region you can read our article.

Bruno (CAN) - Trekking El Chaltén & El Calafate - 7 Days | Well organized guided trekking tour. Our guides for our 3 treks were awesome! During our stay in El Chalten, we were caught in a snowstorm and roads were closed for 2 days. James and Martin helped us during these 2 days with our extended stay in the hostel and arranged transportation back to the airport. They kept us informed of the road closure status and made sure we were able to go back to the airport safely and continue our trip in Argentina. We recommend Tour Radar & Unu Raymi!!!
Mikko (FIN) - A South Perú Adventure - 21 Days | My experience with Unu Raymi was great! I chose the "South Peru adventure" and added a visit to the Ballestas/Huacachina at the start and one extra day in the Amazon at the end. All the different trips around Cusco (and Ica) as well as the main trip to Choquequirao and Machu Picchu were well organized and I felt like I got to see the best parts of the Andean region. The guides were all experts and I felt safe and part of the team at all places I visited. I think for an adventurous soul, who has some urge of getting off the beaten everyday-tourist path, Unu Raymi is a great choice! Mikko
Morgan & Perdita (UK) - Lima Tour, Cusco, the Sacred Valley + Machu Picchu, Mt Vinicunca - 7 Days | We had an amazing time thank you so much to Edwin for helping us at each stage. And had an absolutely beautiful time seeing Peru. Cusco was the most stunning place I've ever seen, has my heart ❤️❤️❤️ | South America is an incredible and diverse continent & we'll definitely be back someday 🙂 🙂 🙂
Nam (USA) - Peaks of Ausangate & Cordillera Huayhuash - 21 Days | This tour was one of the best adventures I had in my life. The guides Eduardo and Herman are kind, knowledgeable, and were always checking up on me since we were at 16,000+ altitude. They know the terrain very well and we’re giving me history and geography lessons on the trail. We shared many laughs and stories together. Our mountain cook Jaime cooked delicious meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and was always offering me a hot beverage. Pedro our horseman always had my tent ready at the next camp! The sites on and around Ausangate are awe inspiring. There are way less trekkers on this trail than the others, so if you are looking for peace and calm, this is the trek to be on. We had to start very early some days and the. reward was seeing the crimson sky and sunrise. Overall this was a thrilling trek, one that tested my limits, and left me humbled and helped me define who I am. Totally recommend it to any adventure seekers!
Joel (AUS) - 'O' Circuit Trek, Torres del Paine - 8 Days | I booked the 8-day ‘O’ Circuit trek in Torres del Paine through Unu Raymi and completed the trek in late December 2023. The booking process prior to the trek was quite straightforward, and James was able to answer the various questions that I had. The trek itself was fantastic and I had an excellent team in Francisco (as my guide) and Teo (as the cook/porter) out on the trail. Francisco obviously knew the trail well, and in addition had very good knowledge about the plants we saw and was able to point out the names of the various mountains throughout the trek, as well as being very good at spotting the condors high above on several days. Teo did a superb job with the meals on the trek. He was able to accommodate my request for vegan food and I was amazed at the variety of the different meals he was able to prepare, including fresh vegetables at various times, and every meal tasted great. Overall it was a fantastic experience!
Mario (ESP) - Perito Moreno Glacier, Mt Fitzroy, El Chaltén, 'W' Trek, Torres del Paine - 11 Days | Hello James, Edwin, I want to thank you for the organization you have done for this trip. They have been flexible with my dates, and with a last minute organization. All information was clear, and has been available in advance. They have been with me at all times. Lucho is a guide with a lot of experience, and walking with him in El Chaltén has been very pleasant. I adapt the itinerary so that you can enjoy the time I was there as much as possible, and it allowed me to see more places than I expected. In Torres del Paine, Edgar has been an excellent guide. He knows the park very well, he has been a wonderful cook, I never thought I would eat this well while trekking and he has made the experience wonderful. I leave Patagonia with the certainty that I will return. Thank you both very much for the organization, for the effort and attention you have put into this trip. Mario
Nick (AUS) - Patagonia - El Calafate: Perito Moreno Glacier, El Chaltén & Mt. Fitzroy - 10 Days - Date 04.09.24 | (Nb. Nick's Trip was amended due to visa problems entering Chile, we extended trekking in El Chaltén to compensate) | I've had a wonderful trekking experience here in Patagonia & I'm very content with what we have done here. Juan was a great guide, accommodations all great & thank you for the reorganization!

    Itinerary

You'll depart from your hotel in Cusco early this morning for a scenic 3-hour drive to the village of Tinqui (3,800 m), located at the base of the Vilcanota mountain range. Along the way, you'll observe local farmers and herders with their alpaca flocks. In Tinqui, you'll meet your crew of mules and their handlers, and start your trek by heading towards your campsite in Upis (4,400 m). The first day of trekking is relatively smooth and passes through hilly grasslands where you may encounter vizcachas (chinchilla-like rodents), condors, and foxes. Once you arrive in Upis, you will be rewarded with views of the Ausangate glaciers rising above the site. End the day with a refreshing soak in the nearby hot springs.
    • Accommodation: camping
    • Overnight: Upis
    • Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Get ready for a day of more intense trekking. From your campsite in Upis, you will climb through the Arapa pass (4,800 m) before reaching Uchuy Pucacocha (“little red lake”), one of the several dazzling mountain lakes in the region. Marvel at its waterfalls, and continue onwards to Jatun Pucacocha (“big red lake”), where you will camp along its shores.
    • Accommodation: camping
    • Overnight: Jatun Paucacocha
    • Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
After a healthy breakfast in Jatun Pucacocha, you'll start your journey to Ausangate Base Camp. You will cross two different passes today. The Apuchata pass (4,900 m) comes first, followed by a descent to the turquoise Laguna Ausangate Q'ocha. After taking some time to rest and enjoy the scenery, you will continue up Palomani pass. At 5,200 m, this is the highest pass of the trek. The ascent is challenging and steep, but well worth it. Upon reaching the summit, you'll be treated to spectacular views of the snowcapped peaks of Tres Picos and Puka Punta. Now, you'll start the descent toward Ausangate Base Camp (4,510 m). Here, amidst the highlands meadows and icy moraines, you'll set up camp for the night.
    • Accommodation: Camping
    • Overnight: Ausangate Base Camp
    • Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
The last day of pass crossing begins with a tranquil hike from Ausangate Base Camp to Lake Ticllacocha. Along the way, more vizcachas and perhaps even rare camel-like vicuñas may be roaming the green grasses of the valley. Then, rise up for your final challenge: Q'ampa pass (5,050 m). You'll see some strikingly beautiful glaciers as you tread over the snowy scree to summit the pass. Once you reach the top, you can see the towering Apu Salkantay. After descending the pass, you'll set up camp for the last time at Pacchanta (4,360 m), and rest in the soothing waters of the site’s hot springs.
    • Accommodation: Camping
    • Overnight: Pachanta
    • Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
This morning, enjoy an easy 3 to 4-hour hike downhill from Pacchanta back to the village of Tinqui (4,237 m) where you'll eat lunch. After lunch, bid farewell to the muleteers, and transfer to your hotel in Cusco for some well-deserved rest.
