Patagonia: W Trek, Perito Moreno & El Chaltén

Patagonia – Torres del Paine National Park. Is one of the most spectacular parts of the Patagonia region and the southern Andes; located at the southern tip of the Americas. The park is a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve and one of the most visited in Chile. Torres del Paine lies between the Andes Mountains and the Patagonian Steppe in southern Chile giving on to the Atlantic coast. So then, it is an area of great scenic beauty; with many ridges, crags, glaciers, waterfalls, rivers, lakes and lagoons.

Then; this itinerary will cover the striking pointed peaks and massive glaciers of the Paine Massif and Southern Patagonia Ice Field; along what is popularly known as the “W” route based on its circuit shape.

El Calafate & El Chaltén. El Calafate is a very charming town of double-pitched roofs and colorful gardens that always offers a friendly welcome to its travelers, plus it is also the gateway to the lakes, Andes and Southern Patagonian glaciers, namely the Perito Moreno Glacier. El Chaltén is a Patagonian small town often proclaimed as the «National Trekking Capital of Argentina,» but it is also well-renowned for amazing climbing, camping, horseback riding, fishing, rafting, and many other outdoor activities. You’ll participate in some famous treks, including Mt. Fitzroy, and other activities here in Patagonian Argentina.

Following in just over a week; you will trek through almost 65 miles (100 km) of trails and stay at a variety of lodges; shelters (refugios) or camping for the overnights. After all; this tour is best suited for experienced trekkers; or physically-fit adventurers who are willing to practice hiking trails with, at times, demanding conditions. Crowds of trekkers/travellers are more prevalent during the high season; which also overlaps with pleasant summer weather in the Southern Hemisphere.

Bruno (CAN) - Trekking El Chaltén & El Calafate - 7 Days | Well organized guided trekking tour. Our guides for our 3 treks were awesome! During our stay in El Chalten, we were caught in a snowstorm and roads were closed for 2 days. James and Martin helped us during these 2 days with our extended stay in the hostel and arranged transportation back to the airport. They kept us informed of the road closure status and made sure we were able to go back to the airport safely and continue our trip in Argentina. We recommend Tour Radar & Unu Raymi!!!
Mikko (FIN) - A South Perú Adventure - 21 Days | My experience with Unu Raymi was great! I chose the "South Peru adventure" and added a visit to the Ballestas/Huacachina at the start and one extra day in the Amazon at the end. All the different trips around Cusco (and Ica) as well as the main trip to Choquequirao and Machu Picchu were well organized and I felt like I got to see the best parts of the Andean region. The guides were all experts and I felt safe and part of the team at all places I visited. I think for an adventurous soul, who has some urge of getting off the beaten everyday-tourist path, Unu Raymi is a great choice! Mikko
Morgan & Perdita (UK) - Lima Tour, Cusco, the Sacred Valley + Machu Picchu, Mt Vinicunca - 7 Days | We had an amazing time thank you so much to Edwin for helping us at each stage. And had an absolutely beautiful time seeing Peru. Cusco was the most stunning place I've ever seen, has my heart ❤️❤️❤️ | South America is an incredible and diverse continent & we'll definitely be back someday 🙂 🙂 🙂
Nam (USA) - Peaks of Ausangate & Cordillera Huayhuash - 21 Days | This tour was one of the best adventures I had in my life. The guides Eduardo and Herman are kind, knowledgeable, and were always checking up on me since we were at 16,000+ altitude. They know the terrain very well and we’re giving me history and geography lessons on the trail. We shared many laughs and stories together. Our mountain cook Jaime cooked delicious meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and was always offering me a hot beverage. Pedro our horseman always had my tent ready at the next camp! The sites on and around Ausangate are awe inspiring. There are way less trekkers on this trail than the others, so if you are looking for peace and calm, this is the trek to be on. We had to start very early some days and the. reward was seeing the crimson sky and sunrise. Overall this was a thrilling trek, one that tested my limits, and left me humbled and helped me define who I am. Totally recommend it to any adventure seekers!
Joel (AUS) - 'O' Circuit Trek, Torres del Paine - 8 Days | I booked the 8-day ‘O’ Circuit trek in Torres del Paine through Unu Raymi and completed the trek in late December 2023. The booking process prior to the trek was quite straightforward, and James was able to answer the various questions that I had. The trek itself was fantastic and I had an excellent team in Francisco (as my guide) and Teo (as the cook/porter) out on the trail. Francisco obviously knew the trail well, and in addition had very good knowledge about the plants we saw and was able to point out the names of the various mountains throughout the trek, as well as being very good at spotting the condors high above on several days. Teo did a superb job with the meals on the trek. He was able to accommodate my request for vegan food and I was amazed at the variety of the different meals he was able to prepare, including fresh vegetables at various times, and every meal tasted great. Overall it was a fantastic experience!
Mario (ESP) - Perito Moreno Glacier, Mt Fitzroy, El Chaltén, 'W' Trek, Torres del Paine - 11 Days | Hello James, Edwin, I want to thank you for the organization you have done for this trip. They have been flexible with my dates, and with a last minute organization. All information was clear, and has been available in advance. They have been with me at all times. Lucho is a guide with a lot of experience, and walking with him in El Chaltén has been very pleasant. I adapt the itinerary so that you can enjoy the time I was there as much as possible, and it allowed me to see more places than I expected. In Torres del Paine, Edgar has been an excellent guide. He knows the park very well, he has been a wonderful cook, I never thought I would eat this well while trekking and he has made the experience wonderful. I leave Patagonia with the certainty that I will return. Thank you both very much for the organization, for the effort and attention you have put into this trip. Mario
Nick (AUS) - Patagonia - El Calafate: Perito Moreno Glacier, El Chaltén & Mt. Fitzroy - 10 Days - Date 04.09.24 | (Nb. Nick's Trip was amended due to visa problems entering Chile, we extended trekking in El Chaltén to compensate) | I've had a wonderful trekking experience here in Patagonia & I'm very content with what we have done here. Juan was a great guide, accommodations all great & thank you for the reorganization!

Itinerary

On the first day, you’ll leave together with your guide and arrive at Torres del Paine National Park. Your guide will help you organize your entrance into the park. (FYI: The bus journey lasts about two and a half hours (112 km).)

You will start early towards one of the park's most famous landmarks, the Mirador Base Torres. During the first part of the trail, you will walk through the pampas and cross the Ascencio River, then head up about 3 km until you reach the Paso de los Vientos, which gives you incredible views of the valley and lakes.

You will continue until you reach the Chilean Refuge, then head into a forest of lengas eventually reaching La Morena, where the hardest part of the trekking begins. You’ll walk along a rocky path until you reach the spectacular Mirador Base Torres. Later you will descend towards the Central Sector to have dinner and sleep.

  • Meals: Boxed Lunch & Dinner

Today, leaving after breakfast from Sector Central (base Torres), you’ll connect from Lake Pudeto to Paine Grande by catamaran. This is a 40-minute journey that is awe-inspiring across Lake Pudeto giving a magnificent view of the Cuernos Mountain Range, & you’ll have a trek in the afternoon to the Mirador Carreta on arrival to Paine Grande. In the evening, a delicious meal awaits, and time to relax in the evening before rest.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Boxed Lunch, Dinner

Today you’ll trek around 13.5 km bordering Lake Nordenskjöld, Cerro Almirante Nieto, and the impressive Cuernos del Paine. During the trek, you will have beautiful views of granite-formed mountains, lakes, and zones where you can appreciate the abundant flora and fauna of this Patagonian Park.

Reaching the viewpoint of the Valley Frances, from here you’ll have one of the most breathtaking images of the circuit: the view towards the valley flanked by the hills of Paine Grande and Northern Horn amongst others.

You will have dinner and sleep in Paine Grande.
  • Meals: Breakfast, Boxed Lunch, Dinner
  • Accommodation: Refugio or Camping Paine Grande
Today you’ll reach the third milestone of this famous circuit, a place that offers an unforgettable postcard of the park, the wonderful Grey Glacier. The path begins along Paine Grande Hill, the highest point of the Massif (3,050m), with incredible views towards its hanging glaciers. Walking between Ñirres, Coigües, and Notros, you’ll reach the first Mirador of Lago Gray where you’ll see numerous pieces of glacier floating in the lake.

The tour starts with a collection from your hotel in El Calafate. You will board our comfortable buses, where our tour guides will give you information on the place, the glacier, and the tour on our way to Parque Nacional Los Glaciares. Once you arrive at “Bajo de las Sombras” port (located on Route 11, 70 Km from El Calafate), you’ll board a ship to cross Lago Rico and descend on the opposite coast, after a 20-minute navigation in front of the stunning south face of Glaciar Perito Moreno.

When you disembark, you will be welcomed by our expert mountain guides, who will lead you to a cozy shelter with a privileged view of the glacier. Here starts the trekking! We will start by walking along the coast of the lake, keeping our eyes on the glacier so that we can experience all ice carvings. Then, the guides will give a talk about glaciology.

When we reach the glacier side, with its amazing shades of blue ice framing the landscape, you will be divided into subgroups of up to 20 people each and you will have the crampons and helmets fitted, which are provided by the company. This tour is highly personalized (one guide every up to 10 passengers). Once on the glacier, you will hear the safety instructions and you will walk to enjoy this frozen paradise, which was declared a World Heritage Site in 1981.

The level of difficulty of this walk is moderate. The surface of the ice is irregular, but firm and safe. During the trekking, you will be able to see a variety of typical glacier features, such as deep cracks, blue moulins, huge seracs, and turquoise ponds.

At the end of the ice trekking, you will walk on the area around the glacier and the side moraine, from where you will be able to enjoy a panoramic view of Glaciar Perito Moreno, the mountains, and the lake.
